Sandy's Story

Sandy

Sandy Chen’s volunteer journey at Holland Bloorview began when she was in high school and was interested in a career of service in medicine or life sciences. She loved her time at the hospital so much that she came back to volunteer her time after finishing her undergraduate degree in civil engineering at Cornell University. Right now, she’s pursuing her master’s degree in civil engineering at University of Toronto and spending many blissful Monday afternoons with children in the hospital’s therapeutic recreation program. For the past few years, she had also volunteered with Holland Bloorview’s complex continuing care in-patient unit, therapeutic aquatics and also weekend respite and holiday programming.

Q & A

  1. What do you enjoy the most about volunteering in the therapeutic recreation program?

One of the best things about inpatient visits is that I can build a relationship with the kids and see them grow, it’s really meaningful.

  1. What impact do you think you’re making as a volunteer at Holland Bloorview?

As a volunteer, I am bringing a wider community perspective. Especially with my background in civil engineering, I can frequently incorporate some of my engineering knowledge while volunteering. For instance, one time we were building a race car track, so I could add a series of bridges to enhance our track. I believe that everyone brings something new to the table. I honestly feel that the impact Holland Bloorview and the kids have on me is greater than the impact I am making on them.

  1. How is your volunteer work helping you with your future career goals?

Initially, volunteering was more to give back to my community and for my social and mental well-being. But the closer I am to graduation with my master’s, the more I realize that service is more than just an extra-curricular for me. I think service will be a vital part of my career path going forward.

  1. What comes to mind when you think about Holland Bloorview celebrating 125 years?

It’s both an honour and very humbling to be part of this organization. I find it really cool that I’m part of a long history of the important role that volunteers play role in the wellbeing of children.
